Apart from its ports, huge concrete buildings, festivals, museums, and nightlife, Rotterdam is also the greenest city in the Netherlands. More than 20% of the city’s land is covered in green spaces.

There is a park in every neighborhood. Some of the most popular parks in Rotterdam are Het Park, Kralingse Bos, Vroesenpark, and Museumpark, among others. The city has numerous green areas to explore. During the summer, the parks are often bustling with people enjoying barbecues, attending festivals, or simply sunbathing.

Since 2019, over 200 streets, squares, and parks have been transformed into green spaces, and the plan is to create an additional 12 hectares of public space.

Between 2018 and 2021, about 9.1 hectares of green rooftops were added to over 1,000 buildings across the city.

In the city center, the rooftop gardens of the Boijmans van Beuningen Depot and the upcoming green rooftop of De Doelen will be verdant. The roof of the Calypso building has already been transformed into a green space. Many more square meters of green roofs are expected to be added.

In a plan devised in 2020, under the slogan “Rotterdam Stronger through,” the city will invest 233 million euros in seven different urban projects. This investment aims to further enhance the city’s quality of life and attractiveness. The projects are expected to be completed by 2030.

Rotterdam city has identified seven areas where the investment will be focused: Alexanderplein, Rijnhavenpark, de Hofbogen, Maashavenpark, Hofplein & Blaak, Schouwburgplein, and Getijdepark Feyenoord. The goal is to increase the number of green spaces in the city. All these projects are scheduled to be completed within the next 10 years.
