Luchtpark Hofbogen

A park on a former railway line

Luchtpark Hofbogen is one of Rotterdam’s most unusual green spaces. It is located on top of the former Hofbogen railway viaduct, once part of the historic railway line connecting Rotterdam with The Hague and Scheveningen.

The Hofbogen viaduct stretches for almost two kilometres through Rotterdam-Noord and was used by trains for nearly a century. Today, many of the arches beneath the old railway have been given a new life as restaurants, cafés, shops, workshops and creative businesses.

On top of the former Rotterdam Hofplein station, the Luchtpark Hofbogen was created as a small elevated urban park offering a different perspective over this part of Rotterdam.

From railway station to green space

The Luchtpark was designed by architecture studio ZUS, which was also responsible for the nearby Luchtsingel, Rotterdam’s distinctive wooden pedestrian bridge.

The approximately 5,000-square-metre park includes an orchard, meadow, fruit trees, shrubs, native plants and areas where visitors can sit, relax or enjoy a picnic. Parts of the original railway infrastructure, including tracks and platform elements, have been incorporated into the design.

Its elevated position also offers unusual views of the surrounding streets and Rotterdam skyline. The space has been used for cultural activities, performances and events, transforming a former railway station into a small meeting place above the city.

The future Hofbogenpark

Luchtpark Hofbogen is the starting point of a much larger transformation. The former Hofbogen railway viaduct is being converted into a new elevated green corridor known as Hofbogenpark.

The future park will extend for almost two kilometres along the former railway line, crossing several neighbourhoods in Rotterdam-Noord. Its design combines greenery, walking areas, biodiversity, water management and the historic railway architecture.

According to the current municipal planning, construction of the Hofbogenpark is expected to begin at the end of 2026. Once completed, it will become the longest rooftop park in the Netherlands.
