Sports in Rotterdam

Football in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is home to three professional football clubs: Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior Rotterdam. Together they represent different parts of the city and offer visitors three very different Dutch football experiences.

Feyenoord Rotterdam

Feyenoord is one of the most successful and best-supported football clubs in the Netherlands. The club was founded in 1908 and has won numerous domestic and international trophies, including the European Cup and UEFA Cup.

Home matches are played at the iconic De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam-Zuid, which has been Feyenoord’s home since 1937. A match here is one of the city’s great sporting experiences.

Sparta Rotterdam

Founded in 1888, Sparta Rotterdam is the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. The club plays its home matches at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel in the Spangen district, one of the country’s most distinctive football grounds.

Basketball in Rotterdam

Feyenoord Basketball

Feyenoord Basketball represents Rotterdam in professional basketball. The club competes in the BNXT League, which brings together teams from the Netherlands and Belgium.

Field Hockey in Rotterdam

HC Rotterdam

HC Rotterdam is one of the city’s leading field hockey clubs and has men’s and women’s teams competing at a high national level. The club is based at Hazelaarweg in the north of Rotterdam, close to Hillegersberg.

Rugby in Rotterdam

Rotterdam also has an active rugby community. Rotterdamse Rugby Club offers rugby union, while Rotterdam Pitbulls RLFC represents rugby league. In 2026, the Pitbulls joined Rotterdamse Rugby Club for the 2026 and 2027 rugby league seasons, bringing both forms of rugby together within the city’s sporting community.
