Kralingse Bos
Kralingse Bos: nature and recreation by the lake
Kralingse Bos is Rotterdam’s largest city park and one of its most popular green spaces. Together with Kralingse Plas, it covers around 250 hectares of water, woodland, open fields and recreational areas in Kralingen, east of the city centre.
The park combines large areas of grass and woodland with walking paths, cycle routes, restaurants and numerous sports and recreational facilities.
It is one of Rotterdam’s favourite places for walking, running, cycling, having a picnic or simply spending a few relaxing hours beside the water.

Kralingse Plas and the beach
One of the main attractions of the park is Kralingse Plas, the large lake around which much of the recreational area is located.
Beside the lake there is a beach, large grassy areas for sunbathing and plenty of space for picnics. On warm summer days, this becomes one of Rotterdam’s most popular outdoor areas.
The lake is also used for water sports, and around its shores you will find a marina, sailing clubs and a sailing school. Swimming is possible at the designated beach area, although it is advisable to check the current water quality before entering the lake.
What to do in Kralingse Bos
Kralingse Bos offers much more than simply walking through the park. There are paths for walking and running, cycle routes, picnic areas and various sports facilities.
The park also has a children’s farm, playgrounds and facilities for water activities. Barbecues are permitted in designated areas, provided that the municipal rules are followed.
One of the most popular activities is walking or cycling around Kralingse Plas. From several points beside the lake you can also enjoy excellent views of the Rotterdam skyline.
Historic windmills beside the lake
On the eastern side of Kralingse Plas stand the historic windmills De Ster and De Lelie, two of the most distinctive landmarks around the lake.
The windmills are reminders of the area’s industrial past and, together with the lake and Rotterdam skyline in the distance, create one of the most photogenic views in Kralingse Bos.
The 1970 Holland Pop Festival
Kralingse Bos also has a special place in Dutch music history. From 26 to 28 June 1970, the Holland Pop Festival was held here, one of Europe’s pioneering multi-day open-air pop festivals.
Often described as the Dutch answer to Woodstock, the festival attracted more than 80,000 visitors and featured international artists and bands including Pink Floyd, Santana, The Byrds and Jefferson Airplane.
More than half a century later, Kralingse Bos continues to host festivals and other events throughout the year.
