Millennium Tower: height, design and luxury

Millennium Tower is one of the most recognisable skyscrapers in central Rotterdam. Located opposite Rotterdam Centraal, it rises approximately 131 metres, or around 149 metres including its spire.

The tower has 34 floors above ground and was built on one of the last available plots along Weena, between the Plaza complex and the De Doelen concert and congress centre.

Its design recalls some of the great North American skyscrapers of the 20th century, with a stepped silhouette reminiscent of buildings such as the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building.

Architecture of Millennium Tower

The main design and façade were developed by Canadian architecture firm WZMH Architects (Webb Zerafa Menkes Housden), together with AGS Architecten.

The tower combines a robust base with a vertical volume that gradually narrows towards the top, reinforcing its classic skyscraper appearance.

Its location on Weena, surrounded by other office buildings and hotels, places it on Rotterdam’s main high-rise architectural axis around Rotterdam Centraal.

Hotel and offices in the same building

Millennium Tower is a mixed-use building. A significant part of the complex is occupied by the Rotterdam Marriott Hotel, while the upper floors contain office space.

The hotel occupies the lower floors of the tower and has its own entrance from Weena, while the offices have a separate entrance from Kruisplein.

The building is also connected to De Doelen, one of Rotterdam’s main concert and congress venues.

A pioneering project using BubbleDeck

One of the most interesting aspects of Millennium Tower is its construction system.

During construction, BubbleDeck technology was used, a concrete slab system incorporating hollow elements to reduce weight and the amount of material required without compromising structural strength.

Millennium Tower was one of the first major projects to apply this technique on a large scale, making it an important example of construction innovation at the time.

Why is it called Millennium Tower?

The name of the building is connected to the turn of the millennium. The project was originally scheduled for completion around the year 2000, hence the name Millennium Tower.

Completed in 2000, the tower helped reinforce the modern character of Weena and the area surrounding Rotterdam Centraal.
