Cooltoren: apartments touching the sky
Cooltoren is one of the most striking residential towers in central Rotterdam and part of a new generation of skyscrapers transforming the city’s skyline.
Designed by V8 Architects, the tower was completed in 2022 after more than four years of construction.
At approximately 150 metres high with 50 residential floors, Cooltoren contains 282 apartments and has become one of the tallest residential buildings in central Rotterdam.
Architecture of Cooltoren
Cooltoren’s design is characterised by its large balconies and terraces, which create different volumes around the tower and break away from the traditional shape of a completely vertical skyscraper.
These terraces become wider at certain levels, providing outdoor space for many of the apartments while giving the building a distinctive silhouette that can easily be recognised from different parts of the city.
The project also includes a 1,770 m² communal rooftop garden and parking facilities for cars and bicycles, combining high-rise living with shared outdoor spaces in a densely developed urban area.
A new tower in central Rotterdam
Cooltoren is located in the Baankwartier, an area of central Rotterdam situated between Coolsingel, Leuvehaven and Westblaak.
For decades, this neighbourhood consisted mainly of relatively low-rise buildings, but in recent years it has become one of the areas where Rotterdam’s vertical growth can be seen most clearly.
From the streets around Leuvehaven and Schiedamsedijk, Cooltoren dominates the urban landscape and forms part of the growing cluster of residential towers in the city centre.
