Health Insurance

Health Insurance in the Netherlands

The basic health insurance in the Netherlands covers essential medical care, such as visits to the doctor, prescribed medications, and hospital stays. It also includes services like midwife care during childbirth, mental health support, and physiotherapy for people with chronic illnesses. You can also add extra coverage for things like acupuncture, homeopathy, and orthodontics, depending on your needs.

Every year, the government lists the medical services that must be included in the basic insurance plans offered by companies.

Children under 18 years old are covered for free under their parents’ health insurance.

Each insurance company has different prices for these additional packages, so it’s important to compare them before choosing the right one. Towards the end of each year, insurance companies update their plans for the following year.

How much does medical insurance cost?

Some large companies offer health insurance to their employees. These companies can get discounts from insurance providers due to their large workforce, making it cheaper for you and your family. Some companies may also contribute a portion of your monthly insurance premiums.

Insurance companies require you to pay a deductible, called eigen risico (own risk). Currently, it’s around 390 euros per year. This is the amount you have to pay for medications and treatments before the insurance company starts covering your expenses.

European Union students can continue using their home country’s health insurance card. If you find a job, you’ll need to get Dutch health insurance.

If you work in the country without Dutch health insurance, you could face a penalty.
