Oudehaven

While its name, Oudehaven (Old Harbor), may suggest it as the oldest harbor in Rotterdam, it is not. The Steigersgracht holds that title and is tucked away between Hoogstraat and Blaak Avenue.

Construction on this port began in 1328. It was in the late 1320s when Rotterdam’s commercial activity started to flourish.

Oudehaven opened for use in 1350, becoming a significant area for trade and development, thanks to navigation.

Oudehaven is connected to the Wijnhaven and Haringvliet quays.

The 1940 bombing heavily damaged this dock and the city center, although some structures like the Witte Huis miraculously survived. The modernization of the area was undertaken by architect Piet Blom in 1977.

Today, the harbor serves as an open-air museum for historic ships, some of which are used as residences. It is also home to the Koningspoort Shipyard, a small shipyard where owners of Dutch historic vessels can undertake restoration work.

In Oudehaven, you can explore the Kubuswoningen, the Witte Huis, the Mariniersmuseum, and the Wijnhaven houses.

During the summer, the area is popular with its abundance of restaurants, bars, and terraces overlooking the old harbor. At night, some of the pubs are transformed into dance floors.
