Rules and Legality of Cannabis in the Netherlands

Although many people think that soft drugs are legal in the Netherlands, the reality is more complex.

The sale of cannabis and its derivatives is still illegal, but authorities allow coffee shops to sell small quantities if they follow certain rules:

No sales to minors
No more than five grams per transaction
No advertising
No more than 500 grams on the premises
No sale of alcohol or hard drugs

Consumption itself is not punishable, but possessing or trafficking large quantities is. Personal use is considered to be up to five grams of cannabis, half a gram of hard drugs, or one ecstasy pill.

The most widely used drug in the country is still alcohol, followed by cannabis and ecstasy.

Coffee shops in Rotterdam offer a wide range of products such as hashish, marijuana, space cakes, magic mushrooms, and pre-rolled joints.

Since the smoking of tobacco was banned indoors, many places now only allow customers to buy their products and smoke elsewhere. Most shops display a menu listing the types and prices of the available weed or hashish.

Nederwiet, a type of cannabis cultivated in the Netherlands, is becoming increasingly popular due to its strength and quality, often surpassing imported cannabis from countries like Morocco or Pakistan.

Even so, it is advised to be careful with edibles or pre-rolled joints, as their THC concentration can vary greatly.
