Rijnhavenbrug, The Bridge That Revived Katendrecht

The Rijnhavenbrug in Rotterdam connects Katendrecht with the Wilhelmina Pier. This new pedestrian and bicycle bridge, spanning 160 meters across the Rijnhaven, was designed by Quist Wintermans Architects on behalf of the municipality of Rotterdam.

Its slender shape and color are inspired by the old harbor cranes. The wooden railings are wide, and the stainless steel mesh offers both visibility and safety. The bridge includes a movable section that is 27 meters wide, with its widest point measuring 11 meters. In this section, you’ll find urban furniture and lanterns on the steel deck.

On February 16, 2011, the first pile was driven for the bridge, which took 15 months to build in Middelburg by the Hillebrand company. From there, the bridge was transported by water in three parts using pontoons. In Rotterdam, two floating cranes placed the bridge sections onto the piers and quay, followed by several weeks of assembly. The bridge was officially inaugurated on February 8, 2012.

Urban, cultural, and social impact

With this new connection, the appeal of both Katendrecht and the Wilhelminapier increased significantly. The cycling time from Katendrecht to the city center was greatly reduced, and local businesses and restaurants benefitted from the improved accessibility. Additionally, the Rijnhavenbrug has become a popular alternative route for visitors heading to the SS Rotterdam.

The bridge has also earned a popular nickname: “Hoerenloper” (prostitute), referencing the former red-light district that once existed in Katendrecht. Today, the Rijnhavenbrug is much more than just infrastructure—it is a symbol of urban renewal and a link between Rotterdam’s past and present.
