Het Nieuwe Instituut
Het Nieuwe Instituut, architecture and design in Rotterdam
Het Nieuwe Instituut is the Netherlands’ national museum and institute for architecture, design and digital culture. It is located in Museumpark, Rotterdam’s main museum district.
The institute was created in 2013 through the merger of several organisations dedicated to architecture, design, fashion and digital culture. In addition to organising exhibitions, it preserves one of the most important collections related to the history of Dutch architecture and urban planning.

Architecture, design and digital culture
Het Nieuwe Instituut offers a programme of exhibitions, activities, lectures, debates, research projects and workshops related to architecture, design and digital culture.
An important part of its work is preserving and providing access to Dutch architectural heritage. Its extensive collection includes archives, drawings, photographs, models and documents from architects and urban planners in the Netherlands dating back to the 19th century.
The institute’s building was designed by Dutch architect Jo Coenen and forms part of the cultural complex in Museumpark. Inside, you will also find a library, a bookshop and a café.
Huis Sonneveld
Het Nieuwe Instituut also manages Huis Sonneveld, located just a few metres from the museum. Built in the early 1930s, it is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Nieuwe Bouwen, the Dutch movement associated with modern architecture.

The house was designed for the Sonneveld family and was an exceptionally modern home for its time. Its interior has been restored to show what the house looked like around 1933.
Much of the furniture, lighting and decorative objects follow the original design of the house, together with personal objects associated with the Sonneveld family. The visit offers an insight into how a wealthy Rotterdam family lived in one of the city’s most modern homes before the Second World War.
