Marathonbeeld: a tribute to Rotterdam Marathon runners

Marathonbeeld is a colourful sculpture dedicated to the participants of the famous Rotterdam Marathon, one of the city’s major annual sporting events.

Made of steel and standing more than five metres high, the artwork was designed by Dutch artist Henk Visch and consists of elements painted in twenty different colours.

These colours symbolise the many nationalities of the runners who take part in the Rotterdam Marathon, an event that attracts participants from all over the world every year.

A sculpture dedicated to the Rotterdam Marathon

Marathonbeeld was unveiled in 2001 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Rotterdam Marathon and was a gift from the Rotterdam Marathon Foundation to the city.

The names of the male and female winners of the Rotterdam Marathon appear at the base of the sculpture, turning the artwork into a permanent tribute to the history of this important sporting event.

The sculpture is located close to the Erasmusbrug, on the northern bank of the Nieuwe Maas, an area crossed by the marathon route and one of Rotterdam’s most recognisable locations.
