Cinerama Rotterdam
This movie theater has been an iconic part of Rotterdam’s film scene since the summer of 1960. Originally located at the old Scala cinema on Westblaak, it was completely transformed to show the famous Cinerama films. The theater featured an exceptionally large screen known as the Cinerama screen, offering an impressive 146-degree horizontal field of view. Rotterdam residents considered it the most beautiful cinema in the city.
Over time, Cinerama screenings ceased, and the 70mm format was adopted for films. In 1980, the Cinerama was divided into five smaller rooms to meet the changing needs of the public.
A few years ago, the theater changed owners and underwent another significant renovation. The original large Cinerama room was then split into two smaller rooms, resulting in a total of seven rooms in the complex.
Today, Cinerama is known for showing a wide selection of films, from artistic productions to the latest commercial releases.

KINO
KINO, located on a street near Nieuwe Binnenweg, is a space where cinema, art, and community come together. It offers a carefully curated selection of films, ranging from classics to modern and auteur films. In addition to screenings, KINO has a bar, restaurant, and versatile spaces for events such as conferences and festivals. Before each movie, they provide an explanation of why it was selected.
The history of KINO Rotterdam goes back many years. In 1909, Jan Verheul built a place called “Ons Huis,” a space intended to foster creativity, enjoyment, and relaxation. During the war, the building was used as a hospital, but later regained its original purpose as a center for art and cinema.
In 1949, it changed its name to ‘t Venster and became a destination for special films. In the 1950s, there was another venue called Lantaren, where people went to enjoy theater and art. Both spaces later merged.
In 1969, the Rotterdam Art Foundation took over management of the space on behalf of the City Council. Later, in 1986, the theater became an independent foundation, and in 2010, it moved to the south of Rotterdam.
The old building was acquired by the people who now run KINO, and in 2016, it reopened as the vibrant cultural space it is today.
